Getting Gmail To Work On N72

Whats the use of a N72 if you do not utilise all of its features. So I thought of getting my gmail activated on mobile. I found a set of instructions using imap or pop to connect and retrieve the messages. But they were always giving me web server not found error, and it was really annoying.

However, after a few more searches, I found an alternative way. This one might be costlier (I have no idea), but it pretty much emulates the gmail, so no complains. This is how you can get mails on your phone -

  • Goto the following location on the mobile http://www.gmail.com/app
  • A file needs to be downloaded. Give the required permission to do so.
  • After the file is downloaded, it will ask you install the application. Just agree and install the gmail application.
  • Now enter the menu and goto the My Own section. The gmail application can be accessed from here.
  • Just enter your username and password to log into the gmail.

Done ! It was so easy I couldn’t believe it. The application also retrieved the labels that I have created on the gmail. There are options to selectively view the mails in each of the labels too. Its just wonderful. Now I shall be able to access my gmail from any part of the world without the need of a computer.

Change Firefox Location Bar Search Engine

Google Search

Google Search

I have been using firefox for quite a long time now and have got used to its location bar search action. Recently, I did a few plugin installs and uninstalls and somehow managed to mess up the configuration such that the location bar search failed. It would display a neterror message and an error page instead of the google search or the I’m Feeling Lucky result. Upon searching for some time, I came across the fix.

Its pretty simple. All you have to do is this -

  • Type about:config in the location bar and press enter.
  • In the filter text box shown, type keyword. Alternately, you could try searching for the keyword.url option.
  • Modify the value of this key to this – http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&q=

That’s it ! We are done. Once again the search feature from location bar works. Also you could have any other search engine instead of google by appropriately modifying the value of the key.

A Forgettable Train Journey

Kharagpur's Railway Station

Kharagpur's Railway Station

Well, I had taken a break from kgp for the last week of January and had been to Hyderabad. One of the reason was that I had an eye checkup scheduled for the 30th of January, but then also I did not want to be here for Spring Fest. The days spent at home were the typical ones, mostly sleeping and eating. Finally it was the time to return back home – back to kgp, where I belong.

With the airbag inside the car, and everyone ready, we set off to the station. Dad started a conversation on the new railway coaches that have been introduced recently, the ones which have 9 seats in a group instead of the usual 8. He was narrating his experience and his opinion was that these coaches should be removed and the railways should revert back to the 8 seats per group coaches. I got drawn into a debate suggesting these new coaches are meant to accomodate more passengers, which is good considering the number of people travelling these days. As usual we never reached a conclusion, but he ended saying I will understand the troubles only after facing them.

He couldn’t have been more true. Unfortunately, I was alotted a seat in one of these coaches, and it was then that I realised how crowded the place looked. There was no room to fit the baggage, and the seats somehow appeared over-crowded. People who had come in groups were unhappy as the new seating arrangement meant that they were divided. Everyone was complainig while also trying to get seats exchanged.

As if this was not enough, I was seated amidst 8 retired bongs ! All of them old people, and they started chattering in bangali the moment the train started. There was only one thing left for me to do – plug in my discman, pick up my rubik’s cube and pretend I did not exist !

This almost sums up my whole train journey, except that the next morning a twist was introduced into the play. A small kid, maybe 2 or 3 yrs of age, came by and looked earnestly at my cube. I tried striking up a conversation with him. But he wouldn’t come nearer unless I give him the cube, and he wouldn’t stay if he got the cube. He made those cute convincing faces that kids make to get their work done. I had to part with the cube. Now with the cube gone, I was left with nothing to do and almost 4 hours to spend.

Luckily the train was not late and I got off before I could go mad sitting there all alone by myself. Truly a forgettable trian journey it was, the last one I hope it was from Secunderabad to Kharagpur.

Great Service – Hyperwebenable

You couldn’t ask for a better free web host and service provider than the Hyperwebenable. I have tried quite a few options, which include blogging on blogspot, wordpress.com, 110mb, 07x,  googlepages and a few more. I was never satisfied with those. Always there was some feature I felt was missing, or limiting what I could do with the web site.

Hyperwebenable has the least of these limitations. They only require you to post about 15 articles every month – not much considering I usally have loads of crap to pen down for future reference. You get a Gb of disk space, no CPU or bandwidth maximas. The only feature that they do not provide is a C – Panel. Uploading files is not possible. Also they insert advertisements into every page – the only drawback of  theirs. But I have found a way around it – I use firefox with ad block plus, simple !

As I mentioned, they do not provide you any options to upload files onto their server. Installing a plugin or a theme is done by one of the Plugin Install plugin which they pre-install for the user. However, if any additional file has to be uploaded, you are sure to run into problem.

Recently, I came across Google Friend Connect. I liked the idea and wanted to try it out. But it required me to upload two files in my root directory. All I did was mail the hyperwebenable guys to upload these files into my folder and let me know when done. The very next day I received their mail informing me that the work was done and that I could go ahead and plugin the required codes.

Well, I have added the code for a members display thing. There are more plugins available – a wall comment plugin – which I might add later on.
