Ted Talks : Sheena Iyengar on the art of choosing

A rose by any other name looks different, and probably also smells different.

Sheena Iyengar through her studies on culturally and geographically different people tries to discover the effect choice has on people. Its all a matter of perspective she says. She demonstrates this by considering the 3 assumptions of choice:

  • Make your own choice
  • More options -> Better Choices
  • Never say no to choice

Speaking for myself, in the first two points I am the anti-american kind of person. In a group, I leave the choice on the others. I care little about self happiness as long as most of the people in the group are happy. It is perhaps because of how I have been brought up. Dad made all of my educational choices. He told me what to study and mom dictated when I studied. And when we went out on a family outing or we bought anything, being the elder brother, I mostly let my brother choose. So the story of my life has mostly been that of adjusting to the choices made around me.

As for the second assumption, once again I do not believe more options make it easier to choose the best product for yourself. In fact, lots of options scare me. Unless two things are vastly different I cannot choose one from another. If you ask me choose between two varieties of black leather bag that look almost the same, have almost the same number of pockets, etc; I will come up blank. Similarly, if you ask my opinion on which platinum credit card to have, I am sorry but they are all the same to me. INOX and PVR are the same to me as well.

The third one I have not yet formed any opinion. I do not really agree with the study she did to elucidate that point. I do not like the idea of having no choice. After all, I should be able to change things if I get uncomfortable. But yes, at times it becomes easier when someone else makes a choice for you. When I got a rank of 404 in IIT JEE entrance exam, I was pretty happy until dad told me of the tough choice I had to make – Electrical in Madras, or Computer Science in Kharagpur. At that time it was a very tough choice to make. I let dad make the choice for me, trusting his decision, which considered introspectively, was the best decision. He was able to make the correct decision because he knew of my interest in computers.

I think people should always have the right to choice. But they should learn when to exercise the right them self, and when to let others make it for them.

Bichku is an Abbreviation?

I knew that Udit is nicknamed Bichku. Until yesterday I hadn’t realized that I did not know the origin of the nick. It was revealed to Birinder and me that it has a full form! And what more, his earlier name was Hichku!

Sadly, I still do not know what they stand for. That’s one more thing on the list that I need to find out.

Auto Problem In Bangalore ?

I have not used this system myself, yet.

A friend forwarded me this letter:

You are in a hurry to catch the train. You pack all your stuff and frantically run out in the hope of catching an auto. You come out and see 5 autos standing at the corner. You thank God and ask them – “Majestic chaloge kya??” The Answer is “Rs 200 hoga!!”. “Kya?? It just cost Rs 100 till Majestic”. “Bahut rush hai sir!!”. You move on to the next auto, to try your luck and surprisingly, you have the same conversation “Bahut rush hai sir!!”. Finally you give up and bargain the price to Rs 170 and hope you don’t miss your train.

Sounds more than familiar??

You stand on the road and keep on asking the passing autos for a ride to your destination – if it’s not your day, the autos will not even bother to stop; if you’re a bit lucky they might actually slow down to hear your destination’s name and think for a second( i always wonder if they are calculating their net profit) and then speed away. However if you are more lucky, the auto guy might actually quote you an exorbitant price and then speed away. But if it’s your extremely lucky hour of the day, you might end up getting an auto which is ready to take you to the destination at meter price.

In my six years of existence in Bengaluru, these experiences have been really instrumental in teaching me great virtues – Patience and Tolerance. But at what price??? exorbitant rates, extremely rude behavior and what not …… After years of feeling used, i set out to find the answer for this misery – was there no government system that could bring these auto guys to justice? As a citizen, how can i express my concern?

This search took me to the Koramangala RTO office (BDA complex) and to my surprise i found that there did exist a government system which i believe 99.99% of Bengaluru is unaware of !!

Note the vehicle number (KA-XX-YY-ZZZZ) and email the details to transcom@kar.nic.in. Based on the prefix XX (for example KA-01), complaint will be sent to one of the ten RTO offices in Bangalore and adjacent taluk areas. Alternatively, one can also call these offices at the number given below based on the vehicle number prefix and directly lodge a complaint.

Vehicle Prefix (KA-XX) Bangalore location Phone number
* KA-01 Koramangala 080-25533525
* KA-02 Rajajinagar 080-23324104
* KA-03 Indiranagar 080-25254310
* KA-04 Yeshwantpur 080-23376039
* KA-05 Jayanagar 080-26630989
* KA-41 Gyanabharthi 080-28602833
* KA-50 Yelahanka 080-28561366
* KA-51 Electronic City 080-25735522
* KA-52 NeelaMangala 08234-285598
* KA-53 KR Puram 080-25617951

Once the complaint is received at the corresponding office, a notice is issued to the address of the vehicle’s registered owner, requiring him/her to turn up at the RTO office within 7 working days. Every RTO has about 10 IMV’s (Inspector of Motor Vehicles) who seize the vehicles which don’t report to the RTO.

The penalty levied from the auto-waalas is rs.100 under section 200.

The various offences among others for which one can lodge a complaint
* Refusal to come to destination (Any destination!!!)
* Demanding excess fare
* Using rough language
* Cheat the public, for e.g. taking longer routes.
* Faulty Meter

There is also a helpline number – 080-22353785 available Monday – Saturday from 10:00 am – 5:30 pm on which one can call to lodge complaints.

Proxy Setting In Google Chrome

For some reason Google have decided to use the network settings of windows. So when you try to configure proxy you are taken to the internet explorer settings. Now in my case, the company has set a default proxy and I am not priviledged to modify or bypass it. And this proxy had blocked web-mail sites like gmail. And since chrome was using the same proxy settings, I was unable to access gmail on chrome as well.

Mozilla had no problem as I could select the “no proxy” option in its network settings and choose not to use the system proxy. I needed something similar for chrome as well. Some googling around and I found the solution.

Simply append

--proxy-server=

to the Target field, which can be accessed by right clicking the chrome icon and selecting the properties option. Now I can happily access my web-mail from within the office.

Ted Talks : How Youtube Thinks About Copyright

Margaret Gould Stewart in this video explains the copyright violation of new videos that are uploaded to youtube. She says that when a video is uploaded, its heatmap is checked for a match with all the existing videos. Each point is tried for a match with each other point so that if the uploaded video is a clip of the original, or has audio/video slightly slowed or fast forwarded, even then the two would get matched.

Unless, the user of original video has mentioned strict no copy policy, in which case a new upload gets immediately rejected, when an uploaded video is found to match with an existing copyright video, the user owning the copyright is given an option to deal with the video .  The user might want to allow the upload if he sees a potential for advertisement/propagation.

She mentions an example wherein a video song released by Sony went off the charts in just a few weeks. Months later, a wedding video was uploaded featuring the same song. Now since Sony had the copyright to the song, they were given the option to either reject the upload or let it be. They allowed the upload, and put up advertisements and links to this upload from their page. Within weeks the video went ballistic and was watched by millions of people all across the world. The song was back in reckoning and it made to the 4th spot in the weekly charts!

Thinking about it, I do feel a bit of leniency can do good promotion of a video and should be the encouraged option.

A Few Monologues I Liked

Not at all an exhaustive list. Mentioning only 4 that come to my mind now.

Jack Nicholson, A Few Good Men (1992)

You can’t handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know – that Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.

Samuel L Jackson, Pulp Fiction (1994)

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

Mel Gibson, Braveheart (1995)

You have come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight? Aye, fight and you may die, run and you’ll live. At least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance. Just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they’ll never take our freedom!

Robert Duvall, Apocalypse Now (1979)

You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for twelve hours. When it was all over I walked up. We didn’t find one of ‘em, not one stinkin’ dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like… victory. Someday this war’s gonna end…

Latest Addition To My Collection : Philips Arcitec

This is mom dad’s return gift for me on their 25th anniversary. :)

All of a sudden I had this impulsive desire to get myself an electric shaver. My search landed me on the Braun Series 7 page, and immediately I knew that I wanted one. The website has listed around 8-9 shops in Hyderabad which stock Braun products. I spent the evening calling them up one by one, only to be told that none of them have the series 7. The best one shop was able to offer me was the Series 3, otherwise others had Series 1.

Philips Arcitec

Philips Arcitec

Disappointed, I chose to settle for a Philips instead. The best model launched by Philips in shavers is the Arcitec series. Again, upon calling up a few stores I found that none of them had this. Dejected, I made up my mind to go to a few more stores and buy the best available alternative. And this is when I entered GVK Mall.

The Shoppers Stop at GVK mall is spread over 3 floors, and a small corner on the first floor has a rack which has electronic goods such as mixer, heater, press-iron, and squeezed between all these was the one thing I was desperately looking for. And what did I find when I removed the few boxes which hid the lot – Philips Arcitec!!!

Well, Arcitec comes in 6 models. Three of them are plain and 3 come with automatic cleaning system. Shaving experience is the same though. So if you want to go for the most economical choice, you would select the 1050 model, which is the most basic one. But of course, I did not have any other options there, so 1050 it was for me. The price though was too high – Rs. 13000. Well, I decided to buy it. An Arcitec is a good enough alternative to the Braun Series 7 shavers.

The booklet inside the box mentioned that it might take a couple of weeks for the skin to get used to electric shavers. But little did I know that my skin would irritate after the first shave. Perhaps, it is because I over did it, or perhaps this is what is meant by getting used to. The after-shave feeling though was great. I loved it. My Mach 3 is going to thrash can, its Arcitec from now.

Talking About Religion In General

Let me start by asserting that I am an Atheist, a naive one, but one none the less. I call myself naive because if you were to have a debate about atheism with me, I probably will not be able to argue giving definite theories or concepts, but I will definitely be able to justify my beliefs with my logic.

Logic, I think is a very powerful tool that we intelligent human beings have, and animals lack. We have the ability of reasoning, to question the events occurring in our surroundings, and then to learn from the process of questioning. And yet when you think about it, we do not really question every belief of ours. Why?

I do not believe in god, because no one was able to prove me his existence.

People say god is omnipresent. Well, let us consider this opinion. If the god exists, and if he is indeed omnipresent, then he should be all around us, and within each of us. In that case, I do not need to go to a church or a temple or whatever to pray. I could as well pray considering my brother as the god. Extending the same argument, I can claim that there should be a god within me too! So everyday, if I were to close my eyes for a minute, and make a pledge with myself that I will go out and complete all my objectives for the day and also contribute towards the welfare of society in whatever small manner, the god within me will be pleased.

And this is my point. If there indeed is a god, why do we need to show him our affection by praying? What good does that do to the society? Instead, if we rather utilized the same time helping a poor child, I see the world becoming a much better place to live in. But if you insist on reciting lines of texts from supposedly holy scriptures, then again answer to me what good does it do to you? Reciting is completely different from following. As Williams Shakespeare writes,

The devil can cite scripture for his own purpose! An evil soul producing holy witness is like a villain with a smiling cheek.

[Merchant Of Venice]

And I beg you not to give the oft recited excuse of calming ones mind by recital of holy scriptures. Our brain is the biggest fool you can ever hope to run into and psychology works either ways. It can be tricked into believing anything. If you have read the book Phantoms in the Brain by V S Ramachandran, you’ll know exactly what I am saying. Some people who have lost an arm, have been tricked by their brains into believing that they still have the arm, and in fact they sometimes feel excruciating pain in the same severed phantom arm. Sometimes, your brain can be tricked into seeing and yet not seeing. In a rare malfunction of visual nerve cells, it could happen that you cannot visualize the object in front you, i.e, cannot see it, and yet perceive it. As an example, if the person, with this disorder, was made to stand in front of a board which has a huge C written on it, the person will say he cannot see the letter. The brain will trick him into believing that there is nothing in front of him, which is opposed to being blind. And now if you were to ask the same person to write the letter on a piece of paper, he will most certainly be able to! You may want to read the above book if you don’t believe me.

As I was saying, our brain can be tricked into believing anything. The society has fooled it into believing that prayers have a calming effect on us, but we can very easily, by practice, rid ourselves of that notion.

Those scriptures have their purpose, I do not argue that point. Their sole purpose is to teach us morality. We should adopt the good in those stories and try influence the society to do the same. Instead, all we do is to learn the texts by heart and never follow the principles it preaches. I respect Ramji as a good person, but I refuse to bow before an idol of his and think of him as a god. I learnt from Ramayan a few good stories, but never that Ram is our god and that only through his prayers can I lead a happy life.

I have a very simple rule of life, question everything. So if you were to tell me that your religion professes some theory, I am definitely going to question the theory until you can convince me of the logic behind it.

I was having a discussion with a friend who told me that his religion professes nothing but the truth and how to distinguish the right from wrong. To this my obvious question was – Is Truth, Right and Wrong absolute or relative? And please do not tell me that they are absolute. I will get into another debate with you then. Truth is nothing but an interpretation of our observations. And since interpretation is not absolute, truth cannot be. In fact, I doubt if even observation is absolute. Right and Wrong are the two domains divided by an imaginary line, the definition of which is different for different people.

All I want to tell people is that blindly following anything is a crime. By doing so, we give a lot of authority and power to these preachers, and history is proof that these maniacs with power want only one thing – more power. Instead, if we were to question every thing that they tell us  to follow, if we were to ask for the logical justification of every action,  our society would be much better served.

But since the society consists of more followers than leaders, this is going to be an extremely difficult goal to achieve.

Aardvark Acquired By Google

This news surprised me just as much as the launch of Google Buzz. I have used Aardvark, and I cannot imagine why it interests Google. Vark has a completely different concept to that of Google Search.

The idea in both the case is to find an answer to a users query. Google uses its advanced crawling, indexing and fast searching technologies to quickly answer the search query typed by its user. Aardvark on the other hand believes that the best way to get a question answered is by putting it across to real people. See, completely different approach.

In Aardvark, you type in your question (it could be quite lengthy), give it a few tags (just like you would select keywords for a Google search) and submit it. The tags are used to find a suitable user to put the question to. When an user answers the question, you can revert back and engage him in a conversation getting more out of him. But obviously, there is a considerable time lag as you have to wait for someone to answer your query.

Here is a screen shot of a question I asked. I got back replies from three people. If I want, I can ask the Aardvark to get me more answers.And of course, it also has a GTalk bot that you could add and ask questions to.
